What is ISRO? India's space agency, explained for curious kids

ISRO — the Indian Space Research Organisation — is India's national space agency. Founded on 15 August 1969 and headquartered in Bengaluru, ISRO builds and launches India's satellites, rockets and space missions. In August 2023, its Chandrayaan-3 mission made India the first country ever to land a spacecraft near the Moon's south pole.
ISRO works under India's Department of Space and was shaped by physicist Dr Vikram Sarabhai, widely called the father of the Indian space programme. His argument was simple: a developing nation needs space technology precisely because it is developing — for weather forecasting, communication, mapping and education.

ISRO is India’s government space agency, like NASA is for the USA. It launches its own rockets (PSLV and LVM3) from Sriharikota, runs Earth-observation and navigation satellites, and lands robotic missions on the Moon. Its Chandrayaan-3 lander touched down near the lunar south pole in 2023, which no country had done before.

What does ISRO actually do?
ISRO's work falls into four buckets that a child can understand. It builds satellites — machines in orbit that handle TV signals, weather forecasts, navigation (India's own system is called NavIC) and photographs of Earth used by farmers and disaster teams. It builds rockets to carry those satellites up. It runs exploration missions — to the Moon (Chandrayaan), Mars (Mangalyaan) and the Sun (Aditya-L1, launched 2023). And it is preparing Gaganyaan, India's programme to send its own astronauts to space on an Indian rocket.
ISRO's most famous missions
- Aryabhata (1975) — India's first satellite, named after the ancient Indian mathematician-astronomer.
- Chandrayaan-1 (2008) — India's first Moon mission; its data helped confirm water molecules on the Moon.
- Mangalyaan / Mars Orbiter Mission (2013) — reached Mars in 2014, making India the first country to succeed at Mars on its very first attempt.
- PSLV-C37 (2017) — launched 104 satellites on a single rocket, a world record at the time.
- Chandrayaan-3 (2023) — soft-landed the Vikram lander and Pragyan rover near the Moon's south pole on 23 August 2023. India now marks that date every year as National Space Day.
- Aditya-L1 (2023) — India's first dedicated solar observatory, studying the Sun from a special point in space.
Why do children in India search for ISRO so much?
Because ISRO has become a household name. In WhyCosmos’s own keyword research (Ubersuggest, India, 2026), “ISRO” is searched roughly 301,000 times a month in India — more than “NASA” (about 201,000). Both are national space agencies. NASA (founded 1958, USA) has a much larger budget and runs flagship projects like the James Webb Space Telescope. ISRO (founded 1969, India) is known for frugal, reliable missions — Chandrayaan-3's budget was around ₹615 crore, less than many Hollywood films.
