A telescope is like a light bucket. Stars are very far away, so only a tiny bit of their light reaches your eyes. A telescope has a big lens or mirror that catches much more light and funnels it into your eye — so a fuzzy dot turns into Saturn with rings.
Explain it to a 13-year-old
A telescope gathers electromagnetic radiation — usually visible light — with an objective lens (refractor) or a primary mirror (reflector) and brings it to a focus, where an eyepiece magnifies the image. Aperture determines how much light it collects and how much detail it resolves; magnification is secondary and can always be changed by swapping eyepieces.

Why “600x magnification” on the box is a trap
Cheap telescopes advertise huge magnification numbers. But magnification without light is just a bigger blur — a useful rule of thumb is about 2x magnification per millimetre of aperture at most. A 70 mm telescope is honest at around 140x; anything claiming 500x on a 60 mm tube is marketing. Judge a telescope by aperture and mount steadiness, never by the magnification printed on the box.
Does my child need a telescope to learn astronomy?
No — and starting without one often works better.
