Astronomy is the science of everything beyond Earth's atmosphere — stars, planets, galaxies — built on observation, mathematics and predictions that can be tested. Astrology is a traditional belief system that links the positions of planets to human personality and events. They share ancient roots and even some vocabulary, but they separated centuries ago: one is a science, the other is not.

Astronomy is the science of finding out what stars and planets really are — giant balls of gas and rock, very far away. Astrology is an old tradition that says the planets’ positions on your birthday shape your luck. Astronomy is about studying the sky; astrology is about believing the sky is sending you messages. Scientists have tested it — the planets are amazing, but they are not writing anyone’s diary.
Explain it to a 13-year-old
Astronomy is a natural science: it explains celestial objects through physics, makes precise predictions (eclipses to the second, spacecraft trajectories to the kilometre), and changes its conclusions when evidence demands. Astrology makes claims about personality and fate from planetary positions; when tested in controlled studies, its predictions perform no better than chance, which is why it is classified as a belief system rather than a science. Historically the two were entangled — Kepler cast horoscopes for income while founding modern astronomy.

Why do people confuse them — especially in India?
Three honest reasons. The words sound alike in English. Both talk about the same objects — Saturn appears in the textbook and the birth chart. And historically they were one practice: ancient Indian astronomers produced world-class positional astronomy (Aryabhata computed eclipses in the 5th century) inside a tradition that also served astrology. The calculation half grew into modern astronomy; the prediction half remained a belief tradition. Respecting the history does not require confusing the two today.
What to say when your child asks “is astrology real?”
A fair script: “The planets are absolutely real, and studying them is called astronomy. Astrology is an old tradition that many people follow, but when scientists tested whether birth charts predict people’s lives, they found they don’t. You can respect the tradition and still know the science.” That answer honours grandparents and evidence in the same breath — and it usually launches better questions than it closes.
