How does the ladder actually work?
- NSEA (around November): a written exam held at centres across India, organised by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). Thousands attempt it; the top scorers qualify onward.
- INAO (January–February): the national olympiad, run by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE, TIFR Mumbai) — harder, more conceptual, with real problem-solving.
- Selection camp: qualifiers attend a camp at HBCSE with theory, data-analysis and night-sky observation tests.
- IOAA: the five selected students represent India internationally.

What should preparation look like at ages 8–16? (The honest answer)
Not cramming. The olympiad’s later stages reward understanding — a student who knows why orbits work beats one who memorised answer keys. The sensible sequence for a young child: build genuine astronomy foundations first (what things are, how light and gravity behave, how to read the sky), keep mathematics strong at school, and attempt NSEA when they are ready — typically in senior classes. A structured astronomy course at ages 8–16 is foundation-building for this path; it is not, and should not pretend to be, olympiad coaching.

Astronomy is one of the few olympiads with a night-sky practical — it rewards children who have actually looked up, not only solved worksheets.
